Product Description

Consumers use the Internet 15:1 over traditional shopping methods, and Internet sales increase 25% yearly. Businesses must take informed action to survive this paradigm shift. This book paves the way.

From the Author

I have worked in the Website industry for over 10 years, observing business practices and the evolution of technology. Part of what I do is working with business owners to demystify what most people consider “hard to learn” technical information, putting it in plain English and in business terms. As a business owner myself, I realize that business people generally are not excited about learning every detail about how to program a Website; they want to know how to effectively use a Website to increase profits and provide better customer service. This book is not written as a technical book. It is a practical book on explaining what a Website can do for you and how to make the best use of it WITHOUT being oversold on a site or confused by tech jargon.

This book is the perfect business owner’s guide to buying a website. Written in layman’s terms makes it easy to read and understand, and will help you determine if your business needs a website, and select the right options for your business. Chapter 1: The Basics includes “Two Hundred and Two Reasons to do Business on the Internet”, Chapter 2:Your Options compares the pros & cons of using a traditional developer, building it yourself, and turnkey solutions. Chapter 3: Questions & Answers has a table of average website costs around the country, and what features to look for in a website. Chapter 4 helps you to evaluate your need to arrive at a decision. Chapter 5: Marketing gives you ideas to help market your website and marketing through search engines. [. . . ] Overall, this is a excellent resource for anyone who wants a website, or for anyone who has one, but wants to get more out of it.

Before I share my opinion, I will first qualify it. I am a web site professional. I work mostly with traditional design, but I sometimes recommend various turnkey packages. I have been in the Internet industry for about 11 years. My business (which I founded in 1997) has consulted a portfolio of over 4200 clients and provided service to over 2300 web projects ranging from site development to search engine marketing. Needless to say, I lend a critical eye to any new book on the topic of web sites. That said, I found Website 411 to be an INCREDIBLY VALUABLE resource. It is a book written to help business leaders make informed decisions, yet I have also found it to be an EXCEPTIONALLY USEFUL tool in my role as a web site service provider and consultant. It provides CREDIBLE, SUBSTANTIATED, and OBJECTIVE information to consumers (web site clients) in a way that is straightforward and easy to understand. It is evident that the author has INSIGHTFUL and RELEVANT professional experience with the subjects of web design, search engines, web usability, and marketing. Probably the most significant detail, however, is the simplicity with which these topics are conveyed in plain language (no computer jargon) so that non-technical business people can understand what they need to know. This USER-FRIENDLY book is a worthwhile resource for both the web site customer AND the web site professional. As such, I have been successful in fulfilling two clients’ needs by simply bookmarking a section of the book and asking them to read it. In short order, their questions were satisfied, saving everyone time and money in the consulting process. I will be keeping my copy of this book close at hand in my future consultations. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that every web site shopper reads it, and that every web site professional references it to their clients. This book is a real eye-opener. Think you know what to expect from a web developer? Think again! I learned so much about what to ask and how to save money from the pages of Website 411: Business Survival in the Internet Economy; it was indispensable! I’m not sure about anyone else, but my business keeps me busy enough that I don’t want to tie up all of my time agonizing over a website. After reading this, I felt prepared to make an informed, decisive decision. I knew what to ask and how much things should cost. I own a small business and have a tight advertising budget. In the end, I put out about $400 less than what I would have paid otherwise, had I not read it. Every business decision maker should read it! I also saved on ongoing costs like hosting, marketing and so on by taking the author’s advice on what to look for in contracts with service providers. In doing so, I avoided some hidden costs and unnecessary expenses, and I learned enough so that I didn’t feel that my web developer was “talking circles around me. ” Well worth the read! My hat’s off to the author on this one! Mitch Rider
