Choosing a Name For Your Website

Choosing a Name For Your Website

Okay, so you have your website laid out, complete with graphics, and great content. But, what are you going to name it? Choosing a name for your website is one of the most important components to owning a website. First of all, a website’s name is the first thing that people will think of when they are reminded of your site. When a person asks, “what is the name of the website you own?” you will definitely want to be sure you can answer them with a name that is catchy and memorable.

It is important that the name of your website not be too complex and hard to remember. Websites which are too wordy are often forgotten. In this fast world we are living in, we need something quick and simple. You may feel as if all quick and simple ideas have been exhausted. It might definitely seem that way, but the truth is that they’re are still tons of great ideas out there. Try your luck and see what works and sounds the best. If the name has been taken, then try brainstorming a couple more ideas that could possibly suit your website.

You must make sure the name you choose for your website makes sense. It may sound catchy and creative, but does it fit your page? Does the potential name of your website flow evenly with the material and information found on the site? For example, you cannot create a website about shoes and name it something like, “The 40 Greatest Outfits On The Net” or something that makes absolutely no sense at all. Your name has to relate to the website, or people will not go for it. After all, you do want your site to be one that people return to over and over again, right? Think keywords. What are the words people frequently use to search for websites on your topic? Try including a couple of the words in your title that are used for search purposes.

It always pays off to make the name of the website sound exciting, like there is nothing else like it. Try to make sure that it grabs attention, and try not to make it too long. Five small words or less is usually good enough for most people to remember. When words start to become long and numerous, people begin to lose interest. No one wants to type in an address that is eight to ten words long. If it takes longer than five seconds to say, then it is probably not going to fit very well.

The internet is a complex unit of information. Each of us dream of having our own little personal space on the web where we can share information, meet people, do business, blog, etc. The name of your website defines what it is all about, and can mean the difference between a couple and a ton of return visitors.
